Our hope with the hotel was to make a space for people to be inspired by the islands. Through creating residencies and workshops a community could develop, and these creative exchanges would encourage taking something with you and leaving something behind. A group of talented kind friends came in 2017 to help us renovate the hotel, they left us with optimism and colorful library walls in exchange took with them memories, mustard and field recordings. It was a privilege to have a few of them return this year to perform music inspired by that stay.
The performance took place in our incredibly special church with a reception following at the hotel. It was a moment to celebrate the hotel surrounded by new friends and old friends and neighbors, thank you to everyone who came! We hope that this is the beginning of many more beautiful things being created and made here on Kumlinge. Special thanks to Jeremiah for being a spark that begins so many stories. To Marta and Jeremiah for sharing such a stunning performance and making the first album!
Special thanks to a grant from Alands Kulturdelegation in partnership with Kumlinge Ungdoms Förening.
On August 10th at 15:00 at St. Anna Church on Kumlinge, Jeremiah and Marta will perform and present new music from their album inspired by travel in the archipelago. Following the concert, we will host a reception inviting guests to visit the Hotel and learn more about these ongoing projects. We are happy to presented this event with the support of Kumlinge Undomsförening and Ålands Kulturdelegation.
Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer are an American music duo, fusing electronic and acoustic instruments together with synthesizers and viola. Both artists live in Los Angeles, CA USA where Jeremiah is an artist, graphic designer, and musician and Marta is a studio and live performance musician. Jeremiah has presented his work at The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The Chicago Cultural Center, and the Getty Center Los Angeles, amongst others. Marta most recently recorded strings on Beyonce's album, The Lion King: The Gift and performed with LA chamber orchestra, Sonic Open Orchestra.
In 2017, the duo traveled to the Åland Islands and were inspired by the landscape, sounds, culture, and midnight sun. They recorded a full length album and are working to formalize its release in 2020. The recordings form an experimental/ambient album reflecting both their journey to the islands and a continued dialogue with the islands and local communities.
They seek to create a long-term relationship that fosters a dialogue towards the cultivation of creative community and socio-environmental awareness with the Åland community, resulting in a series of creative workshops and an artist residency program inviting artists and musicians from around the world.
